NeartheendoftheprecedingchapterIassertedthatthe forcomplementizerhasbeenover-extendedasananalytic deviceforderivinginfinitives.Mydiscussionofthe semanticfunctiono£forpresupposedthattruefor-complementscouldbesyntacticallydistinguishedfromotherinfinitivalcomplements.HereIwilljustifythatassumption.InSectionA:rinvestigatetheeffectofcomplementizersonthesubjectsoftheircomplements.Ageneral constraintisproposedwhichisappliedinlatersections totheanalysisofvariouskindsofinfinitivalcomplement constructions,in(B)totheso-called"nominativeandinfinitive"andin(C)totheaaccusativeandinfinitive".
