ABSTRACT
ThetransformationalhypothesisofComplementizerInsertion,asIshowedinChapter1,failstoexplainoreven describecorrectlymanycharacteristicsofcomplementizers; thevariouscomplementtypesarenotformedbytransformationbutaregeneratedbythebasecomponent.Thecomplementizers'semanticfunctions,isolatedinChapter2,make itevenmoreobviousthattheseconjunctiveparticlescannotbedispelledfromthebase.InChapter3Ishowedthat twounderlyingsourcesforinfinitivalpredicatecomplements mustbedistinguished-- the"bareS"andthefor-s.
