Toestablishtheseresults,Ilookintoseveralsubsystems ofEnglishsyntax-- the"predicatecomplement"system (Chapters1-3)andthe"determinercomplement"systemof comparativeandrelativeclauseconstructions(Chapters4 and5).Myanalysesarebynomeansexhaustiveorcomplete accountsofthesesyntacticsubsystems,butareinstead selectiveexplorationsofsomeofthegrammaticalregions wherecomplementizersoccurorhavebeenthoughttooccur.
