ABSTRACT

The Key Stage 3 (KS3) English programme of study solely focuses on the pupil's ability to read and respond to actual written texts on a page, 'including in particular whole books, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors'. This chapter demonstrates how multimodal texts are not singularly used to enhance meaning in the works of literature outlined in the programmes of study. Feedback from English teachers about the schemes of work that are currently part of the proposed KS3 English curriculum model suggests that the study of a whole multimodal text is powerful in terms of helping the pupils' progression of key literary skills. In the majority of the schemes of work taught across the proposed KS3 English model, multimodal texts are referred to in stage two of the learning cycle on the corresponding medium term plans.
