ABSTRACT

LetusbeginbyconsideringBresnan(1982).Bresnan distinguishestwotypesofcontrol:functionalcontrol

(thatcorrespondsroughlytowhatwecallobligatory control)andanaphoriccontrol(thatcoversbothour argumentandprominencecontrol).Functionalcontrol requires'identityofallgrammaticalfeatures'while

anaphoriccontrolrequiressimply'identityofrefer-

ence'.Functionallycontrolleditems(e.g.VPs)are associatedwith'openfunctions',i.e.functionalstruc-

equations(inthecaseoflexicalinducedcontrol)guaranteesthatthese'gaps'infunctionalstructuresare

properlyfilled.Anaphoricallycontrolledstructuresare

functionalstructuresthatcontainaphoneticallyunreal-

izedpronominalelement('PRO').VariousfactorsconstrainboththeoccurrenceandtheinterpretationofPRO.
