ABSTRACT

InprecedingchapterswehavearguedforaVP=P analysisofverbalargumentsmostlyonthebasisof distributionalcharacteristicsofverbalargumentsandon thebasisofcontrolphenomena.Herewehaveconsidereda numberofanaphoricphenomenainvolvingverbalarguments. Inparticularwehavetoconsiderthebehaviorofso calledPROarbconstructions,thesloppyandnonsloppy readingsinit-pronominalizationphenomenaandsomevalid entailmentsthatconstructionsinvolvingverbalarguments license.Allthesephenomenareceiveastraightforward andsimpleaccountonthebasisofthepresentapproach. Evenifthesamerangeofdatacanbeaccomodatedin variousalternativestothetheorydevelopedhere,it appearsdifficulttobelievethattheycanbedealtwith asstraightforwardly.
