ItisoneofthebasicinsightsofearlytransformationalaccountsofEnglishcomplementationthatverbal argumentsbehavewithrespecttoopacityasiftheyhada subject.Thisinsighthasinfactprovidedoneofthe strongestargumentforassuming thatverbalarguments indeedhaveaphoneticallyunrealizedsyntacticsubject. Inthepresentsectionwewishtoinvestigatehowthe accountofopacitywehavedevelopedinthepreceding section,togetherwithourtheoryofcontrolmakethe appealtoPRO'sunnecessary.Giventheargumentswehave developedthroughoutthiswork,thisisalltothegood.
