ABSTRACT

Art-making is an exploratory activity where involvement in the process takes an art-maker to places that may not have been conceivable otherwise. When immersed in art-making, people can lose time or can be focused solely on the here and now. Art engages the senses, and often the entire body is used during the experience of art-making. Constructivist philosophical ideas are based on the theories of cognitive psychology and cognitive science. Constructivism is a way of understanding how humans acquire knowledge and make meaning of the world around them. According to A. D. Efland, a schema is a structure in one's mind based on past experiences that occur regularly and are held in memory as a guide for future encounters with the world. Schemas change and adapt throughout life and through the different developmental stages. Equilibrium is another essential component of Piaget's understanding of knowledge acquisition.
