ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study that focuses on how vulnerable a critical infrastructure was to a biotoxin attack. A biotoxin attack can quickly incapacitate a large portion of the population, which can overload medical resources as well as other first responders. The Rajneeshee cult salmonella attacks were carried out to influence local elections by incapacitating non-cult members during election time. A large-scale chemical attack is difficult to prevent on a major transportation hub. On critical transportation resources, chemical detectors could be deployed to alert passengers to the danger of certain types of air-dispersed chemicals being released. The chapter also presents a case study that illustrates how a major transportation hub was vulnerable to attack from low-technology devices using unconventional weapons. It then presents a case study that illustrates how vulnerable transportation infrastructure could be to takeover and used as a very large and powerful weapon.
