ABSTRACT

This chapter examines what the likely future trends are in US agricultural and food policy and analyzes the future of US agricultural and food policy. It interprets the significant positive and normative influences that are currently driving changes in US agricultural and food policy. The chapter examines the choices and consequences associated with two contrasting methods of policy change: broad-based major transformation, or gradual marginal adjustment. It analyzes three connected but different areas of policy change: food, environmental, and agricultural policy. The chapter summarizes why it is essential to continue to review and interpret US farm and food policies. It utilizes Albert Hirschman's Exit, Voice, and Loyalty paradigm to suggest strategies that can influence the future development and implementation of effective agricultural and food policies. The chapter predicts how current choices create alternative economic consequences.
