ABSTRACT

A major part of the manager’s role is to give feedback to individuals and the team as a whole. Feedback is the process by which a manager states their aims and objectives, opinions and ideas to a team member on a given topic/idea/suggestion/action/task to assist that individual in their work and to make clear the overall aims of the setting. Giving effective feedback requires the manager to plan and prepare carefully so that team members do not end up feeling humiliated or ‘put down’. There are a number of ways of offering feedback to a team and managers can use several methods alongside one another. It is important to decide which is most appropriate for the person and for the type of feedback to be given. Individual feedback is best given in one-to-one supervision, which should happen regularly. Supervision sessions are about daily tasks and responsibilities and medium-term goals.
