ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with possible approaches to scripted plays in the classroom as well as the use of different texts as a basis for drama. It is common to use the term 'text' in the context of drama to refer not just to the printed word on the page but to any sign system which can be the object of interpretation. The use of the word 'text' here in more traditional sense is simply for convenience, to include written plays as well as other sources such as poetry and prose. Prose, poetry and drama have traditionally been the three genres studied for public examinations, and that influence has been felt throughout English curriculum. Although work on play texts and poetry is likely to be more relevant to English and drama specialist, the work on prose is likely to be of interest to teachers of all subjects, and many of the techniques can be adapted to other contexts.
