ABSTRACT

Intentionality is key to creating an impactful classroom social and emotional learning (SEL) program. The mindful set-up of the classroom environment is a critical piece in the program's success, as it creates a safe environment in which learning takes place. This chapter recommends that all school stakeholders check in with students as they enter the building at the start of each school day. The purpose of a Thumb Check is to create caring, connecting relationships between students and adults. It is also a practical tool to gauge students' energy, feelings, or emotions. The Mindful Practices POP Chart empowers students to Pause and identify what is keeping them from being present and ready to learn. On an energetic scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Lethargic and 10 being Frenetic, 5 would be Cool, Calm, and In the Zone. For a productive learning environment, it is needed that the stakeholders move both energetic ends of the spectrum toward 5.
