ABSTRACT

Intentionality is key to creating an impactful classroom SEL program. The mindful set-up of the classroom environment is a critical piece in the program's success, as it creates a safe environment in which learning takes place. Thumb Checks are a quick and simple way to give students an opportunity to assess their own feelings and body sensations in the moment, and for the teacher to get a measure of the students' feelings. The purpose of a Thumb Check is to create caring, connecting relationships between students and adults. It is a practical tool to gauge students' energy, feelings, or emotions. For a more thorough approach to SEL in classroom, give students 2 minutes of music to get their materials organized and visit the POP Chart as they enter class. The goal is for students to unplug, find their breath, and be present. Anytime a new activity is learned, a visual for that activity should be added to the POP Chart.
