ABSTRACT

The SEL Story is an instrumental element of each teacher's approach to SEL. It is the peer-to-peer communication tools employed during the activity that are the richest and most impactful aspect. There are two options for how the teacher may implement SEL Stories in their classroom: Be the solution teams and Class Dialogue. In the first option, the students work in teams to decide a solution to a class problem or issue. The role of the teacher is key to build consensus and keep transitions tight. This is an excellent activity for helping students take ownership of their behavior and find solutions in real time. In the second option, the teacher uses one templates to create a culturally relevant SEL Story based upon problems or issues the class is experiencing. The more culturally relevant the stories are to the students' lives, the larger the impact.
