ABSTRACT

Thumb check and POP chart, sample implementation schedule, come together time (CTT), classroom rules, cues and attention getters and talking stick are the invaluable components of the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Classroom. Taking the time to pre-teach and re-teach body awareness is essential for the success of the early childhood classroom's approach to SEL. Children need to know what the expectations are for learning. Transitioning from one activity to the next is often difficult for young children and requires clear pre-teaching and re-teaching. Children need structure with consistent expectations and consequences for appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Cues with short and simple wording help children respond quickly in an appropriate manner. Call and Response is best used to get the children's attention and participation so children will be ready to learn. Safe Touch is an important concept for early childhood learners to understand.
