ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and scientific data to obtain a holistic vision of the changes occurring on the territory. It combines aspects from the sciences and the humanities in the hopes of reaching a clearer understanding of the potential impacts of these changes on the local Cree populations. The changing climate and with it the changing weather represent real and important challenges for the Cree. The increased hazards linked to the practice of subsistence activities through the modification of environmental conditions require the Cree to quickly integrate new behaviours and security measures while animal presence and behaviour modifications could lead to changes in community dynamics and changes in the key species for subsistence activities. For the Cree of the Eastern James Bay Territory, the impacts of climate change over the last 100 years are superimposed onto a period of intense socio-environmental and economic change.
