IhavenotyetexplainedwhatImeanbyaphrase-marker.Itis,of course,akindofsyntacticorganization,onewhichcanbepictured inatree-diagram.Oneexampleofatree-diagramwasgivenonp.15 above.Thisdiagramshowstwofeaturesoforganizationasyetunexplained:thetree'branches'overandoveragainfromtopto bottom;andateachofthepoints(callednodes)atwhichthe branchesdivide,andateachoftheterminalpointsofthetree,there isanabbreviatedlabel-S,NP,N,etc.Inthisandthefollowing chapterIwillshowwhatismeantbythebranchingconventionand bythelabellingconvention.Whenwehaveagreedonthemotivation for,andmethodof,drawingtree-diagrams,wecanbegintousethem asawayofrepresentingphrase-markers.Specifically,theywillserve todisplaythestructureofunderlyingphrase-markers.
