Theword'grammar'inpresent-daylinguisticshasatleasttwo importantmeanings.Ontheonehand,wesaythataspeakerknows thegrammarofhislanguage.Heusuallydoesnotknowitconsciously-unlesshehassomespecialtraininginlinguistics,hecannot talkconfidentlyaboutthenatureofhisgrammar.Agrammarinthis firstsensecomprisesthelinguisticknowledgespeakerspossesswhich enablesthemtocommunicateintheirlanguage.'Grammar'hereisa psychological,mentalistic,concept.Thesecondsenserelatestothe linguist,nottothespeaker:thelinguistissaidtowriteagrammar ofthelanguage.Thisgrammarisaformal,explicit,descriptionofthe language.
