ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will go through the derivation of one simple sentence in detail. The method will be to give a sequential derivation, in which each line is derived from the preceding one by the application of one rule to just one symbol. (Actually, a rule is applied to one string and changes one symbol, or feature contained in a symbol, at a time.) Rewriting rules are followed by various kinds of transformational rules: lexical insertion rules, rules for expanding Det and Aux, and realization rules. In general, the T-rules follow one another in derivations in the order just stated. In the display below, I will intersperse notes on the rules employed with the lines of the derivation.
