ABSTRACT

This chapter walks the scheduling committee through 15 steps to achieve the schedule that best fits the K-8 school and its students. Within a designated elementary school building, the schedule combines a middle school schedule with an elementary schedule. As in a classroom where target learning guides the instruction, the mission/vision statement serves as the target for decision-making. This is no less true in seeking out an efficient and equitable schedule than in seeking the curriculum that best meets the needs of the students to be served. Any decision that affects faculty and must be implemented by them benefits from their expertise. In a K-8 building that seeks to combine elementary and middle school schedules, faculty input assumes an important role. Based on projected enrollment and staffing allocation, create a grid that lists the number of sections per grade level in the grade column and the potential number of instructional modules.
