ABSTRACT

For the most part the narratives in this book draw on positive experiences of education. We explore what inspired and supported us. We celebrate those individuals in our lives who we can see in our current selves as teachers. This chapter is different. It is an acknowledgement that for some people schooling was a period of their lives characterised by fear and humiliation. Such negative feelings can remain with us for the rest of our lives and can leave individuals feeling distanced from formal schooling and suspicious of education.
