ABSTRACT

Cellular phones have only been widely accessible to many in the past fifteen or twenty years. The Internet provides individuals opportunities to form meaningful connections with other people, in a sense, providing a new social space for the creation and experience of community. One can enter into an online community and violate the norms and rules of behavior. Language and conduct that exist in normal face-to-face interaction can be altogether absent in online social interaction. One can say whatever one wants to anyone one wants online. There are no social cues against this behavior and far fewer repercussions. An individual can be abusive and manipulative in how they interact with others online. If an individual confuses an online relationship or community as an end (meaningful, interpersonal relationship) rather than as a means to achieving that end, then that person is now vulnerable to the new narcissus' deception, betrayal and pain.
