ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the reader the darker side of stardom and fame. Many individuals may aspire to be wealthy. In fact, that is often a measure of one's success in American society. Many though, want to be famous and with that fame, wealth will surely follow. Celebrity status appears to be just as desirable as the achievement of wealth or success. An important question to ask is whether or not celebrity status should be the new aspiration for members of the society. The presentation of a false, artificially constructed self, can then serve to protect one's true self. Any abuse, trauma or betrayal experienced by the individual is deflected by the artificially constructed self and therefore not experienced by the true self. Even more, this feeling of helplessness is false and arguably an excuse for the new narcissus' subsequent behavior.
