ABSTRACT

Modern individuals live in a society ruled by the pursuit of the accumulation of material goods. Hoarding is viewed as a mental disorder. However, this disorder could also be a reflection of a societal disorder; of a society that advocates narcissism with a focus on consumption. Anxiety as a result of having too many choices is a clear consequence of such societal characteristics. Individuals are encouraged to focus on themselves even to the point of objectifying one's self. There is constantly a dichotomy between the real and the false, illusion and reality: this illusion of difference/uniqueness. The new narcissus is a new sociological problem that results from fake enchantment. Producers of reality television programs may encourage the participants to exemplify certain aspects of their personality, even if that is not the 'real' them and how they normally behave.
