ABSTRACT
This chapter considers British membership of the EC/ EU in the period 1973-2010 (see Chapter 12 for the period since 2010). It does so with a view to examining the distancing between the original motives and inspiration underlying the emergence of the EC, as discussed in the previous chapter, and British interests and perspectives. It deals with the immediate reception given to membership by the political parties and public.
