ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the strategy and tactics of successive British governments in the EU policymaking arena, mainly in the period 1973-2010 (see Chapter 12 for further coverage of the period since 2010). It considers how far government has reflected different types of responses to the evolution of the EU. In particular, it discusses the extent to which government has figured as either a reactive or proactive force in its management of EU affairs and in its approach to initiating or resisting change in the organization. The chapter also examines the different types of responses to EU developments. It does so especially with a view to determining the nature and extent of government awareness of the implications of EU dynamism and the continuous process of Europeanization.
