ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the relationship between Britain’s European and EU role and commitments and the country’s identity, power and interests in the wider world. In particular, it considers the global perspectives that have informed and influenced policy and attitudes towards EU membership, and also the precise ways in which Europe and Britain’s place in the world are tightly interconnected. The subject involves different conceptions, approaches and emphases. Both the making and the study of British foreign policy over the past 70 years have attracted a wide spectrum of opinion.
