ABSTRACT

Duringthepasttwenty-fiveyearsuniversitiesinBritain andNorthAmericahavecommonlyofferedcoursesunder suchtitlesas'IntroductiontoLogic','CriticalThinking'or 'CriticalReasoning'.Suchcoursesaretypicallyjustifiedby theclaimthattheyimprovestudents'criticalthinking ability.Whateverthetitlemaybe,thecontentofsuch coursesconsistschieflyofinformallogic.Noone,asfarasI amaware,haseverarguedthattheterms'criticalthinking' and'logic'aresynonymous,yetpracticehasconflatedthe two.
