ABSTRACT

This chapter steps back and evaluates contemporary trends in urban regeneration in North America. In the context of suburbanization, deindustrialization and neoliberalism, what do we see in as the primary driving processes shaping the process and outcomes of initiatives today and in the near future in North America? Whereas Chapter 1 provides a conceptual introduction to problems of gentrification—including social-spatial dislocation, stigmatization, and inequality—this chapter draws on empirical evidence to illustrate trends in North America cities today. In clearly articulating the challenges, as they exist across urban spaces, we set the groundwork for policy recommendations made in the final chapter.
