ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the topic of gentrification and outlines current theoretical debates surrounding its sociological and economic impacts. We explore contemporary trends in urban renewal across North America in the context of entrenched neoliberal economic policy and globalization in recent decades. By presenting a critical perspective on urban renewal, we draw attention to the social-spatial displacement of the working class in cities on both sides of the Canadian—American border. Despite historical differences in social policy, both countries face mounting pressure associated with rapid rates of urbanization.
