ABSTRACT

The static equilibrium approach of sustainability planning for tourism has been challenged in recent times by the more dynamic, ‘complex systems’ approach of resilience. Evolutionary resilience modelling is regarded as particularly relevant to slow-change factors in community-based tourism settings. To date, resilience analysis has been applied almost exclusively to unsolicited, predominantly external, changes endured by the industry, communities, and physical environment. The idea of resilience through deliberate slow change to erode the tourism resource has not featured prominently in the literature. This chapter presents deliberate change as a resilience strategy in philanthropic tourism.
