ABSTRACT
The discourse on the endangered status of post-communist Romanian traditional villages has traditionally focused on preservation strategies. However, the objective of this study is to look at the traditional village from a community resilience perspective. Particular focus is placed on the local vernacular architecture and its influence on tourism infrastructure and on the overall identity of the Romanian traditional village. The chapter is based on a case study of a traditional village in the Maramureş region of Romania. Results show that traditional lifestyle in this village supports the resilience thinking; that old and new wooden buildings are essential for the community resilience in the region. However unexpected livelihood opportunities for villagers were derived from tourism and wood crafting.
