ABSTRACT

Introduction The current chapter and the next provide a foundational description and analysis, which render a particular conceptualisation of the status quo regarding prevalent dangers. As such they provide a benchmark for comparing dominant DRAaM practices during the course of Chapters 4 , 5 and 6 . While Chapter 3 explicitly spells out this conceptualisation, the current chapter is delivered at a more basic level, from a point of departure at the heart of the common epistemological ground that this book shares with the DRAaM industry. However, this is merely a point of departure, and analyses in this chapter and the next gradually depart from the modes of description and analysis more typical of DRAaM. This chapter is focused more on the materiality of danger, while the following chapter adds to this foundational work through analyses of associated, less tangible, yet profoundly signifi cant forms of suffering.
