ABSTRACT

Many teachers believe that all students instinctively know how to take tests. There are a number of general test-taking strategies that students can learn, such as how to budget their time, how to read directions carefully, and how to read questions carefully. This chapter discusses some of the test-taking skills and strategies that are to be taught students, and how to better prepare students to take tests and how to help them improve their test performance. Very often students assume that they know what they are doing and begin a project or task without first reading the directions. It is only when they run into problems that they go back and read the directions, recognize that they have been doing the task incorrectly, and have to go back and start at the beginning.
