ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors highlight the inquiry structures and strategies that they have helped strengthen at The Discovery School, and emphasize that their story is very much a portrait of the early stages of a new school's efforts to nurture an institutional memory for inquiry and reflection. The Discovery School draws upon the Museum's 25 years of child-directed, open-ended, risk-friendly, inquiry-driven learning, as well as best practices in creativity development. The school values time for the teachers to meet and collaborate on their inquiry and documentation. Sharing teacher documentation is a beautiful process of triumphs and challenges in keeping parents motivated to stay in reciprocal conservation about their children's discoveries and theories. The Discovery School enjoys a symbiotic relationship with the Museum, and the Museum's exhibits and welcoming staff often inspire and expand authors' school community's project work.
