ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author tells the story of how the inquiry group of teachers and district personnel have used the opportunity of regular research meetings to understand the children's learning and their own development as teachers and a school. Teacher research groups are invaluable for supporting reflection and inquiry among children and teachers. Their effects are both educational and political. Teaching can be quite an isolating profession; our inquiry group has made it possible to create a community of educators brought together by the need to make visible our voices, ideas, and learning journeys, with the ultimate goal of offering young children a meaningful educational experience. Reflective teaching, as simple as it sounds, is not easy to engage in, since it requires early childhood educators to reveal their vulnerabilities, beliefs, actions, biases, knowledge, and expertise in the presence of others.
