ABSTRACT
This book has ambitiously sought to understand the factors that influence contrition, or really its thin appearances, in U.S. foreign policy. It has not been my goal to give a definitive account of the causes of contrition, a tricky question even in the most researched cases. This research is necessarily exploratory, seeking to move beyond the “usual” cases and to focus on the applicability of contrition in interstate contexts.
