ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides sufficient background knowledge of the brain and its development to give readers essential knowledge and to discuss the implications of this knowledge for supporting the learning of children and adolescents. Many of the tried-and-true educational methods used in the past can be supported by recent brain research information; however, other effective methods to enhance student learning also may be informed by current knowledge of brain development and mental growth processes. The book also provides an overview of brain research and describes briefly the functions and structures of the brain, including information about the scientific names of such functions and structures. It also describes issues of human development, including brain development, at particular age levels. The book discusses important social policy and educational practice issues that have been related to brain development and that educators and parents may have found recommended.
