ABSTRACT

The early childhood age period is one in which an explosion of synaptic connections occurs in the brain. Brain maturation continues throughout elementary, middle childhood, and adolescent years, and more individualization of brain structures occurs as children's experiences become more focused, based on their interests and opportunities, interactions with technology-augmented devices also will influence brain development during this age period. Human brain development will certainly be affected if the balance of enactive and virtual experiences changes, since the brain's mature structure is derived from the diversity and depth of each human's total life experiences. There are many positive projections of cognitive and sensory capacity expansions in human brain capabilities in the future, most clearly described by futurists such as Ray Kurzweil, who predicts that as various aspects of technology augment the human brain, technology-augmented humans will become new creatures.
