ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with testing films, developers, and papers for use with the Zone System. In the hands of serious photographers, the Zone System can be a powerful, creative tool. Zone System testing is important because it provides photographer's with valuable information and demonstrates that the camera, film, and light meter can work together in a direct and systematic way. One of the objects of Zone System testing is to match the contrast of their negatives to photographer's favorite type and grade of printing paper. Having standardized their normal printing, they can use the higher and lower paper grades when extreme Expansions or Contractions are required to compensate for very low- or high-contrast subjects. An important factor to consider when choosing a personal Normal grade of paper is the light source of photographer's enlarger.
