ABSTRACT

This chapter has several ambitions in the context of inclusive leadership in the university. First, as a resistance to top-down transactional forms of leadership the chapter offers inclusive leadership alternatives through the voices of three women in positions of leadership in a specific university context. Second, the chapter explores the position of women in the university and the barriers women experience in attaining named and formal positions of academic leadership such as, for example, full professor and head of department respectively. While inclusive styles of leadership are not the panacea for gender equity in the university, the discussion brings in the responses of three interview participants to explore the way their experiences in leadership positions in the university have led them to value inclusivity as a fundamental leadership approach. The semi-structured interviews of all participants loosely followed the same structure that began with an introduction outlining their publicly available curriculum vitae, about which each participant was invited to comment.
