ABSTRACT

The interview transcripts provided significant personal insights into the difficulties of leading and managing effectively in the modern and changing UK academic environment and threw up some surprising challenges for leading in an inclusive environment. This chapter focuses on how these leaders cope, the strategies they employ and their views on leadership in modern universities. The LFHE's Leadership and Management Survey (HELMs) conducted in 2014 found that the majority of respondents felt that the leadership skills and abilities required in UK higher education differed from those required for leadership and management in other sectors. The chapter provides a brief overview of the key themes from the Developing the Next Generation study. It then provides more detail on some of the challenges of leadership and management encountered by the respondents and discusses how they map onto the 15 core competencies identified in the Inclusive Leadership model.
