ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the role and purpose of creativity, expressive arts, and play in child and adolescent counseling. It identifies benefits, procedures, and considerations for incorporating games, music, drama, and puppets into child and adolescent counseling. The chapter reviews the goals of play therapy and understand fundamental nonverbal and verbal counseling skills used in play therapy. It also discusses the purpose and benefits of additional applications of play therapy in child and adolescent counseling including sandtray, filial, Theraplay, and Kinder therapy. The primary purposes of bibliotherapy are to provide information, help clients develop greater insight into self, increase in empathy for self and others, and grow in awareness of possible solutions for a particular problem. Adlerian Play Therapy (AdPT) is a play therapy approach based on Individual Psychology, as developed by Alfred Adler. According to Adlerian theory, individuals are born with an innate capacity to move towards growth, purpose, and social connection.
