ABSTRACT

Getting more women to the top is more likely to happen once companies provide better internal opportunities for them to become trained up and gain experience that equips them in terms of their relevant human capital to do the job. This chapter discusses the psychological qualities that are known to be linked to good leadership and then the extent to which women possess these attributes, as compared with men. It examines whether the possession of these qualities translates into great business performance and explores what types of positive benefits women can bring to corporate life that eventually produce positive economic outcomes. The chapter describes whether the corporate world provides sufficient opportunities for women and whether there are signs that women are not treated fairly in terms of how often they are considered for high corporate office and then whether they are appointed to settings that place them at a disadvantage from the beginning.
