ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the methods for assessing the value of the environment using monetary units. In order to assess public works projects provided by the government, it is essential to compare the monetary effects and costs of environmental policies through cost benefit analyses of such policies. However, as there exists no market price for the environment, indicating the effects of environmental policies using monetary units is no easy feat. Environmental assessment methods were developed to achieve this end. While they are relatively new to environmental economics, environmental assessments grow increasingly important to the field overall.
