This chapter demonstrates the use of a computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD)-based adjoint method to inversely design an indoor environment and to identify optimal solutions that satisfy design objectives. It describes the validation of the CFD-based adjoint method for inverse design of a built environment. The adjoint method computes the derivative of the objective function with respect to the design variables, so that the method can search for the direction that gradually minimizes the objective function. With the measured air velocity and temperature in the flow domain as the design objective, the adjoint method was used to identify the air supply inlet location, inlet size, temperature, and velocity. The air supply inlet location, inlet size temperature, and velocity obtained by the CFD-based adjoint method were then used as inputs for forward CFD simulations to calculate the air distribution in the cavity.
