ABSTRACT
Not all Caucasians supported the coup. White royalists were expelled soon after the coup, and plantation owners feared that annexation would deprive them of cheap labor. The conspirators were largely White government officials and their friends, who opposed the repeal of the 1887 Bayonet Constitution. Those supporting the coup were clearly White racists who looked down upon Chinese, Japanese, and Native Hawaiians.
