ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors use multiple emerging concepts—the Great Acceleration, Planetary BoundariesSDGs, Doughnut Economics, and the Anthropocene—to examine the evolving relationships between humans and nature. They also consider how these ideas might help shift many more people towards a more ecologizing mindset. Ecologizing Mindsets for Sustainability choices will determine nature’s long-term viability for supporting life as we know it. The need to stay within the boundaries of both parts of the doughnut creates yet another vital paradox or tension that we humans need to contend with successfully if humans hope to thrive in the future. Transdisciplinary work seeks to co-design and co-produce knowledge with stakeholders with the intention of producing solutions to real world sustainability challenges of the Anthropocene. To purposely create a sustainable system requires an examination of the ways in which institutions affect cognitive frameworks and behavioral drives.
