SEVERALexclusivechamcteristicsoftheRochdaleSocietyhave been,happily,introducedintoothersocieties,andthereforearenow commonfeaturesofco-operativeassociations.Thedetermination todealinpureprovisionsonly,asfarastheycouldgetthem,which allco-operativesocietiesdonow,requiredqui'teapropagandismto establishatfirst.~hnymemberswerewillingtogiveuptheendeavourtosellonlypurearticles,fromtheimpossibilityofgetting them.Topersistintryingtodowhatcouldnotbedonedidseem absurd.Itwasbecauseitoughttobedonethatthebetterclassof memberspersistedinattemptingit.Itwasthisfeelingthatthe pureprovisionsoughttobeobtainedthatledtotheworkingofthe wholesaleidea,whichhassincemadeitpossibleforeverysociety todothesamething.Itwasup-hillwork,hardlyconceivablenow, tokeepupanagitationforpurefood.Everybodyhadanidea thatpurefoodwasthebest;but,unfortunately,manydidnotlike itwhentheygotit.Theydidnot,aswehavesaid,knowthetaste ofit,andtheirtastehadtobeeducated;andmanypeoplenomore likehavingtheirtasteeducatedthanhavingtheirmindseducated. Whenitisdonetheyareveryglad,buttheytakeveryilltothe process.
